VERSION
2 IS HERE!

New
release of leading litigation support software features tools for
handling electronic evidence.
Summation Legal
Technologies, Inc. has released version 2 of the Summation Blaze®
LG product line (comprised of Summation Blaze LG, LG Gold, and iBlaze®).
The latest version of America's most popular litigation support
system includes tools for handling electronic evidence, a hot topic
in the litigation world.
HIGHLIGHTS
OF VERSION 2 FEATURES INCLUDE:
PRODUCTION
TOOLS
New production tools allow users to create automated, Bates numbered
production sets, and then print them with stamps and redactions.
Users can instantly retrieve a detailed production history for each
document in the database or production set. iBlaze users can electronically
archive production sets as searchable Briefcases with permanently
stamped and redacted images. Briefcases can then be burned to a
CD in a format which allows any user to view the images and document
abstract data via a web browser - enabling paperless document productions.
EDOCS
AND E-MAIL
(LG Gold and iBlaze) Now you can search e-mail and attachments,
electronic documents, and pleadings along with transcripts, scanned
documents, and notes with ONE simple command. Users can easily load
electronic documents (Word,WordPerfect, Excel, PDF, etc.), e-mail
(from Outlook & Lotus Notes) and e-mail attachments directly
into Summation's searchable database. Summation software will automatically
extract and code the meta-data for each document into a record and
load the full text. Electronic documents can be viewed either in
their native file format or as a text document!
PLEADINGS
FOLDER
(LG Gold and iBlaze) Ever want to search your internally created
pleadings with Summation? Version 2 can point to a directory of
pleadings right on the firm's network or the user's hard drive.
These files, even though they are not "loaded" into Summation,
can be searched along with your other case data, and the Pleading
hits are displayed in Summation's integrated search results screen.
Users can have multiple pleadings folders in their Case Explorer
tree.

SUMMATION
WINS 4TH CONSECUTIVE TECHNOLAWYER @ AWARD

Summation
received the TechnoLawyer "@" award for Favorite Litigation
Support Solution, for the fourth consecutive year. Results were
announced on April 11, 2002, in a cyber ceremony conducted by TechnoLawyer
Community Manager Neil J. Squillante.
"This is
very great praise indeed, as we recognize the members of the TechnoLawyer
Community as some of the most sophisticated users of litigation
technology around," said Samantha Miller, Summation's Marketing
Manager, who accepted the award on behalf of Summation. "Since
Summation was introduced in 1988, we've worked hard to provide the
litigation community with an application that's practical, powerful
and easy to use. As litigation needs evolve, Summation will evolve
to address those needs."
CaseVault,
Summation's litigation support hosting service, received the TechnoLawyer
"@" award for Favorite Litigation ASP (Application Service
Provider).

SCRIPTING...MY
FAVORITE FEATURE
by
Paul Engel
Summation Blaze LG
comes with a laundry list of great new features, but the one that
I believe is the most powerful is Scripting. In my opinion, this
is the feature that has made the upgrade from 5.x most compelling.
Almost
Infinite Customization
In layperson's terms, scripting makes LG almost infinitely customizable.
Scripting is like Macros on steroids. A programmer is able to access
the data within a case to read it, edit it, add to it and output
it. They can either use the functions that come with LG or write
their own functions. For example, most of the items on the menus
and toolbars can be executed through scripting commands.
When
a firm has a task that is not currently supported by LG, they can
write a script, or have one written for them, and presto
the
function now exists. These Scripts are written specifically for
LG and are launched from within LG. The best way to understand how
scripting can complement your use of Summation is to read some examples
of capabilities that have been added to Summation through scripting.
Here
are scripts that have been requested and implemented by several
of my clients.
Multientry
Sort - The firm often has paralegals, legal assistants
or clerical staff manually sort the values in multientry fields.
This makes the data easier to use. The Multientry Sort script automates
this tedious task. The user can run the script on the results of
a document summary search. It sorts the values in the multientry
fields being displayed in Column View. It optionally deletes any
duplicate values in any field.
Auto-populate
Enddoc# and Pageamt fields - This script allows a firm
to have their service bureau only code the beginning document number
during scanning. The script automatically derives the ending number
and number of pages and populates the appropriate fields. It provides
an audit report that details any overlapping numbers and gaps so
that they can be manually corrected. This saves the firm tens of
thousands of dollars in coding costs. The script can be made to
focus on Begdoc#/Enddoc# or Bates number fields, and can run on
new document collections or existing databases to inspect the numbering
sequence for problems.
As
you can see, scripting can automate many tedious or formerly impossible
tasks. The examples above speak only to document collections. Similar
functionality can be implemented for Notes, Transcripts, and the
ocrBase.
Perhaps you
can now understand why I believe that scripting is the best new
feature of Blaze LG. With scripting, there is very little that the
program can't do! If you haven't upgraded yet, let scripting be
your reason.
Editor's
Note:
Summation Blaze LG uses an Object Model that accepts
common scripting languages, such as VBScript, JScript, as well as
other Object Oriented languages, including but not limited to Visual
Basic and C++. All Summation Blaze LG products include a built-in
Scripting Wizard. The Summation scripting object model is available
at: info.summation.com/scripting/#scripting.

SUMMATION
RELEASES WEB SERVER CONSOLE (SWSC)
Summation
Legal Technologies is pleased to announce the release of the Summation
Web Server Console (SWSC).
What
is the SWSC?
The SWSC is a web-based wizard that helps your IT department provide
secure, dynamic remote access to your Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Access,
and Summation databases as remote data stores over the Internet,
directly from your iBlaze® Case Explorer.
What
are the benefits of the SWSC?
As Summation users already know, remote, searchable access to data
residing in a variety of data sources can be invaluable in helping
you win a case. The question is how to gain access to this dynamic
data when you are not connected to the LAN where the various data
stores are located. The SWSC allows the network administrator to
provide simple, reliable, secure access to live databases for remote
users with the same familiar iBlaze interface they already know
and love.
When
might you use the SWSC?
Here are a couple common scenarios where you might use the SWSC:
1.
A firm with attorneys at multiple remote locations wants to share
access to a central database. The remote attorneys can be given
access over the Internet to the central database simply by double-clicking
on the UDL (supplied by the SWSC administrator) in the iBlaze Case
Explorer tree.
2.
A firm has an existing Microsoft SQL database containing case data
that it wants to share with co-counsel or corporate counsel who
are also using iBlaze. The other attorneys can be given access to
the same live database available to the primary firm, over the Internet.
This means that all of the various counsel can be assured they are
working from the same set of data, rather than potentially stale
records.
If
you would like more information about the SWSC, please e-mail sales@summation.com,
or call (800) 735-7866.
